Clone your perfect employee

Visualise your perfect employee. He or she has a good sense of morality, lacks prejudices, accepts facts and can creatively avoid and solve problems as they arise. Wow! Wouldn’t it be wonderful have a whole staff just like this?

That exact same description can be attributed to a self-actualized person according to “The Theory of Human Motivation”, Abraham Maslow’s breakthrough paper of 1943. Motivation is the name of the team building activity game.

Looking from the bottom up on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, let us assume that your team has the basic physiological needs such as breathing and excretion covered. The next level pertains to safety and security. Corporate team building activities need to appease the fears of the most nervous member of the group to be a success. The most fascinating tier comes next – love and belonging. Without fulfilling this level of needs, self-esteem, respect for self and others, and ultimately the self-actualization characteristics cannot develop or flourish.

Experiential journey

The basic human desire to feel like you belong creates emotions such as happiness, pride, joy, love or fulfilment. These states of mind are chemically produced by endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin – all of which also drive motivation.

Whether the priority of your team building event is to energize, motivate, inspire or rebuild your team, Professor of Psychology at Cornell University, Dr Thomas Gilovich notes that “The reality of our nature is that experiences are part of us. We are the sum total of our experiences.” Experiences are the connecting tissue of our desire is to belong and feel happy.

At the very least, experiential engagement allows your team to discover what things are relevant in their lives. At their best, experiential events connect people with their aspirations, with innovative ways of thinking, and with people to support each other on their unique journey.
